Cottage Style Decorating Ideas

I have always been attracted to cottage style rooms and fnrnishings. Being the only woman in an all-male household, I had to claim some feminine space for myself with pinks, florals, and lace! But my husband and sons didn’t mind, and they graciously helped me fix up my areas.

What is Meant by Cottage Style?

HGTV defines cottage decorating like this: “Cottage style has a colorful, comfortable look characterized by painted or decorated furniture with graceful lines, weathered finishes, textural elements such as baskets, beadboard walls and natural-fiber rugs, and colors taken straight from a lush flower garden.”

Wikipedia also describes shabby chic, which is often a part of cottage decorating. “Shabby chic (pronounced: “sheek”) is a form of interior design where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. At the same time, a soft, opulent, yet cottage-style decor, often with an affected feel is emphasized to differentiate it from genuine period decor.”
